Lady Marauders handle Spring Hill, 73-61

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Lady Marauders beat Spring Hill, 73-61, on Sunday afternoon.

Snapping a four-game losing streak, CSU improves to 6-12 on the season with a 4-6 record in the SIAC. SHC falls to 8-8 overall with a 4-3 mark in the conference.

SHC jumped out to an early six-point lead as forward Tiffany Valentine scored in the pain to give her team a 13-7 lead. CSU battled back as Takyra Gilbert scored six points in the final two minutes of the opening quarter to cut the deficit down to three.

Gilbert opened the second quarter with a make from three-point range to tie the game, 17-17. Coach LaTonya McDole then inserted Sandra Guilford, who made her first three shot attempts to spark a 11-2 run. CSU went on to outscore SHC, 21-8, in the second quarter to take a 35-25 lead at halftime.

SHC scored the first two baskets of the second half to cut the CSU lead down to six. CSU responded as Jaeda Davis connected on her next two shot attempts and Brielle Johnson knocked down a shot from beyond the arc as the CSU led by as many as 16 before taking a 55-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

CSU forward Chervelle Cox helped her team seal the victory with seven fourth quarter points as the Lady Marauders went on to the 12-point win.

Cox finished with her seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She also recorded four assists and three steals. Gilbert and Davis anchored the backcourt with as each player finished with 16 points and five assists. Guilford led the CSU reserves with 10 points.

Tiffany Valentine led the SHC scoring with 22 points. Kate Krout recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds.

CSU will travel to play Salem University on Wednesday night.


Notes


Monday night was CSU’s first home game since Dec. 15.

CSU outscored SHC, 30-13, in points off turnovers.

SHC is the defending SIAC West Division champion.
