DAY TWO RESULTS | CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – 
The Alabama State University men made a surge to the top of the team standings following the conclusion of day two of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Prairie View A&M.

Alabama State, seeking its first SWAC outdoor championship under coach Ritchie Beene, has 69 total points. Southern is second with 43 points, and Grambling State and defending champion Prairie View A&M are tied for third with 33 points each.

On the women’s side, Grambling State continues to hold firm in the No. 1 spot with 55 points. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Prairie View A&M are tied for second with 41 points each, and defending champion Alabama State is fourth with 34 points.

The final day of competition begins at 9 a.m. with the women’s discus and triple jump events. The SWAC Digital Network will broadcast the afternoon events starting at 1 p.m.

DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS:

  • UAPB’s Safiya John set a new meet record on her way to the gold in the women’s heptathlon, scoring 5,257 points. Alabama State’s Latisha Locker (4,836) and Texas Southern’s Kiya Reeves (4,105) finished second and third, respectively.
  • Alabama State’s Jamie Brown (7.75m) bested teammate Marcus Cade in a jump-off to earn the gold in the long jump. Cade won silver, and Jackson State’s Javauny Hyde (7.44m) won the bronze.
  • Prairie View A&M swept the women’s long jump, as Katherine Jackson (5.99m) won the event, Kaizha Roberts (5.84m) finished second, and Devynn King (5.80m) claimed third.
  • Caesar Kemp of Alabama State cleared 17.19 meters in a gold-medal effort during the men’s shot put. Southern’s Charvares Wilson (14.79m) finished second, and Texas Southern’s Chris Allen (14.67m) was third.
  • Prairie View A&M’s Sunne Rodriguez-Weems (6,661 points) won the men’s decathlon, with teammate Tristian Ham (6,396) finishing second. Alabama State’s Chaaka Trahan (6,075) was third. 
  • Grambling State’s Halima Chepkwony won her second gold medal of the meet, claiming the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:52.08). Alcorn State’s Angelica Jacobs (11:54.84) and Grambling State’s Priscilla Kibet (12:09.26) rounded out the top three standings.
  • Southern’s Jazmine Young (41.03m) won the women’s javelin, with UAPB’s Keziann Jones (39.94m) edging Mississippi Valley’s Tyefah Saunders (39.82m) for the silver. Saunders, however, won the shot put event with a throw of 15.00 meters. Jackson State’s Hannah White (14.21m) nipped Texas Southern’s Christelle Nintcheu (14.20m) for the silver medal.
  • In the final event of the day, Texas Southern’s Luis Dereal (9:57.01) overtook Alabama State’s Joshua Coffelt (9:58.05) to win the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Alabama State’s Kevin Smith finished third (10:05.15).
