Lady Tigers outlast Lady Panthers

GRAMBLING, La. | Five Grambling State University women’s basketball players posted double figures in scoring as the Lady Tigers outlasted Prairie View A&M, 73-57, on Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Grambling State (12-13 overall, 9-4 SWAC) led, 19-15 at the end of one period, but trailed, 34-28, at the break. The Lady Tigers took control of the game in the third and outscored the Lady Panthers, 22-12, to take a 50-46 advantage into the final quarter.

Shakyla Hill led Grambling State with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, along with seven steals and four assists. Jazmin Boyd was right behind Hill with 18 points, five boards and one steal, while Ariel Williams chipped in 11 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Justice Coleman and Jasmine Forte each registered 10 points, with Forte pulling down nine boards.

Mariah Campbell paced Prairie View A&M with 11 points and eight rebounds. Ke’Asia Williams and Shala Dobbins each recorded 10 points.

Turning Point

Prairie View A&M opened the second half with a 34-28 lead, but Grambling State rallied and took a 37-36 advantage after a Jazmin Boyd layup with 7:17 left.

The Lady Panthers led, 42-41, after a Ke’Asia Williams bucket with 5:18 left in the third. However, the Lady Tigers got two free throws by Ariel Williams to take a 47-42 advantage with 2:31 remaining.

Prairie View A&M kept the game close and trailed entering the final period, 50-46.

Grambling State grabbed a 57-49 advantage after a Jasmine Forte layup with 6:46remaining, but again Prairie View A&M kept the game within reach and closed the gap to 60-56 with 2:50 left.

The Lady Tigers ended the game on a 13-1 run over the final two and half minutes to complete the sweep of the Lady Panthers.

> Grambling State was 28-of-63 (44.4 percent) shooting and 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) from the charity stripe
> Prairie View A&M shot 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the free-throw line

> The Lady Tigers registered 43 rebounds, including 27 on the defensive glass

> The Lady Panthers pulled down 40 rebounds, with 16 coming on the offensive end

> Grambling State finished with 46 points in the paint, 25 points off 29 Lady Panther turnovers, 24 bench points, 16 fastbreak points and 13 second-chance points

> Prairie View A&M tallied 28 bench points, 21 points off 26 Lady Tiger turnovers, 20 points in the paint and 11 second-chance points

> There were 15 lead changes and seven ties
