Albany State opens season with victory over Valdosta State

Saturday's matchup between Albany State and Valdosta State is the 19th time the two schools have met. Valdosta State has dominated the series, compiling a 17-1 record. The Blazers of VSU also rolled into Albany sporting a number 11 ranking in the American Football Coaches Association poll.

The Golden Rams defense got things going two and a half minutes in when ASU's Nick Scott intercepted an Adam Robles pass and took it 75 yards to the house. A Gabriel Ballinas 22 yard field goal put Albany State up 10-0. After recovering a VSU punt that touched a Rams player, the Blazers were at ASU's 22 yard line but were only able to muster a field goal attempt, which banged o=–ff the upright, keeping the score 10-0. The Blazers' subsequent possession ended when Jaylin intercepted a pass.

Following halftime Albany State scored on two Robles pass was intercepted, this time by Jalen Bush, who returned to VSU's 30 yard line. The lead ballooned to 20-0 five plays later when Chancellor Johnson found Quadrey Simmons. on a 14-yard TD pass.

The final stanza saw both team put up points. Albany State's coming via Balinas's third FG of the game, a 32 yard kick and then a Kelan Fraise 15-yard touchdown run. Valdosta State's scoring was accounted for by two touchdown passes from backup QB Rogan Wells.

The Golden Rams take on Tuskegee University next week in the White Water Classic in Phenix City, AL. Kickoff time for the game is 5:00 p.m. EST. The Blazers also return to action next week in the Okefenokee Classic against Fort Valley State in Waycross, GA; kickoff time is 7:00 p.m. EST.
