Albany State pounds Fort Valley 42-6 in Fountain City Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Albany State completed its sweep of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division on Saturday, Nov. 9, defeating rival Fort Valley State University, 42-6, in the 30th Annual Fountain City Classic at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

With the win, the Golden Rams are now 23-7 against Fort Valley State since the rivalry game moved to Columbus in 1990.

ASU (7-3) will carry a two-game win streak into next the SIAC Football Championship next Saturday, Nov. 16 when the Golden Rams will welcome the SIAC West Champion Miles College. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at the ASU Coliseum. 

The Wildcats’ Marlon Fleming plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 22 seconds left in the first half to pull within 7-6. The FVSU momentum heading into the intermission did not continue into the third quarter.

The Golden Rams’ James Hawkins blocked his second Wildcats punt after FVSU fell a yard short of the first down sticks and his teammate recovered in the end zone for the touchdown. On FVSU’s third play on the ensuing possession, ASU forced a fumble and scored on its first offensive play and the FVSU nightmare third quarter was on. Albany State added two more touchdowns on its next two times with the ball for a 35-6 margin, which FVSU could not recover.

The Golden Rams added its final touchdown of the game on a two-yard run by Marcuis Fulks with 14:50 left in the game. Impressive work by the Dirty blue defensive left the Wildcats scoreless the remainder of the game. James Hawkins was named the Fountain City Classic MVP with six blocked punts, two touchdowns and one safety.

Albany State dominated the rushing game with 178 yards to Fort Valley State’s 11 yards. ASU compiled 183 total yards in the win with Williams completing 1-of-six passes for five yards.

Derik DavisCoemba JonesTerry Compton and Tyler Scott lead the ASU defense with a combined 21 tackles. Davis added two sacks.

Majeste Hansberry and Zach Anderson led the Wildcats defense with seven tackles piece.
