Albany State routs Fort Valley State 34-9 in Fountain City Classic

In his first start of the season, Albany State freshman quarterback Kelias Williams accounted for three touchdowns as the Golden Rams blew out Fort Valley State 34-9 in front of a crowd of 13,391 in the 28th Fountain City Classic.

ASU got the scoring going in the first quarter after a 10-play, 42-yard drive ended with a Gabriel Ballinas 42-yard field goal, giving the Rams a 3-0 lead.

Albany State would extend their lead to 10-0 following Kelias Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run and subsequent extra point.

The FVSU offense would finally show some rhythm in putting together a 6-play, 43-yard that resulted in a 39-yard Juan Serna field goal that would cut the ASU lead to seven , 10-3.

In the third quarter, the Rams would extend their lead to 14 following an 8-play, 56-yard drive that produced a 12-yard TD pass from Kelias Williams to Quadrey Simmons. The PAT brought the score to 17-3. Albany State would then tack two more touchdowns ( William’s second rushing TD of the day and a 72-yard run from Kelan Fraise ) and the rout was on at 31-3.

A 32-yard fumble recovery by Zacharius Anderson’s 32-yard fumble recovery accounted for the Wildcats’ only score of the day. The PAT was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 31-9.

The scoring for the day was closed out by a Gabriel Ballinas 20-yard field goal, which came at the end of the 9-play, 60-yard march by the ASU offense, bringing the game to its final score of 34-9.

With his performance on the day , 141 yards passing and 1 TD, 106 yards rushing and 2 TD, ASU QB took home game MVP honors.

The Albany State defense also showed up big holding Fort Valley without an offensive touchdown, only giving up 209 yards of total offense and denying the Wildacats a single third down conversion( FVSU was 0-12 on third down).

This wraps up the season for Albany State’ They finished with an overall record of 6-4 and 4-2 in the SIAC. As for Fort Valley, they will play on, as they will host Tuskegee next week , November 11, 2017,in the SIAC Championship game. The game is scheduled for 2 P.M. EST and will be televised on ESPN3.
