Cavaliers waive JR Smith

JR Smith and the Cleveland Cavaliers are no more. The team, unable to find a trade, decided to waive the colorful guard, according to The Athletic and Stadium’s Shams Charania.

The move comes as little surprise. The ballclub had been shopping Smith since the early part of the season and in fact shut him down November 19. Smith only appeared in a paltry 11 games this season.

Smith’s contract was a unique one, as explained by Evan Dammarell of Forbes:

Smith’s arrangement with Cleveland was unique, where a team could send the Cavaliers close to $15 million in bad money and then waive Smith before July 1, where he would then only count for $3.8 million against their salary cap for the 2019-20 season.

Amongst the offers Cleveland had included one from the Miami Heat that included the 13th pick and James Johnson but the Cavaliers chose not to pull the trigger on that deal.

With Smith now free to go where he wants, let the rumours of him going to the Lakers commence.
