FOOD LION OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK

#60 Justin Smith, Virginia Union
(Sr, OL – Leesburg, VA)

Smith anchored an offensive line that allowed Virginia Union to rack up 390 yards of total offense, including 191 yards rushing and 199 yards passing, in their upset win over Division I Hampton, 36-7. The 6-1, 280 senior and the rest of the Panthers offensive line didn’t surrender a sack in their season-opening win. 

FOOD LION RECEIVER OF THE WEEK

#17 Charles Hall, Virginia Union
(So, WR – Trenton, NJ)

Sophomore receiver Charles Hall led Virginia Union with 152 yards on three catches with all three going for touchdowns, including an 80-yard pass to score the game’s first points. The Trenton, NJ native also had touchdown catches of 28 and 44 yards in the Panthers 36-17 upset win over Division I Hampton.

#9 Tabyus Taylor, Virginia Union
(Jr, RB – Hopewell, VA)

Taylor rushed for 159 yards on 25 carries with a long of 37 yards Virginia Union’s upset win over Division I Hampton, 36-17. The preseason All-CIAA selection also caught two passes, including a 40-yard touchdown from quarterback Khalid Morris, and returned one kick for 58 yards. 

FOOD LION QUARTERBACK OF THE WEEK

#6 Miles Hayes, Livingstone
(So, QB – Miami, FL)

Hayes completed 13 of 22 passes (59% completion percentage) for 271 and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions. The sophomore had touchdown passes of 68, 17, & 34 yards while leading the Blue Bears to 24 unanswered points in their season opening win over Clark-Atlanta, 24-13.

FOOD LION ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

#32 James Douglas, Livingstone
(Fr, DB – Hometown: N/A

Douglas tallied eight total tackles (4 solo), including 2.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks.The freshman also forced a fumble and had a pass break-up as the Blue Bears defense gave up just 258 total yards, including 99 yards rushing, and held CAU scoreless over the game’s final 44 minutes on their way to a 24-13 win over Clark-Atlanta.

FOOD LION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

#88 Jefferson Souza, Virginia Union
(Jr, K/P – Deerfield Beach, FL)

Souza went 4-for-4 in PATs and 2-for-2 in field goals in Virginia Union’s 36-17 win over Division I Hampton. As a punter, he had seven punts for 244 yards, averaging 34.9 yards, while kicking off seven times for an average of 64.6 yards per kick.

FOOD LION DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK

#8 Keyshawn James, Fayetteville State 
(Jr, DE – Cayce, SC)

James finished with five tackles, 2.5 for loss, along with 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. He helped lead a Fayetteville State defense that gave up just 74 total yards and scored 16 points (2 touchdowns & 2 safeties) in the Broncos 35-21 win over Benedict. 

FOOD LION LINEBACKER OF THE WEEK

#38 Taj Conway, Virginia Union
(Jr, LB – Richmond, VA)

Conway led all defenders with 10 tackles in Virginia Union’s 36-17 win over Hampton University on Saturday. Conway had four solo tackles and had a tackle for a one-yard loss.

FOOD LION DEFENSIVE BACK OF THE WEEK

#5 Keenan Reid, Lincoln (PA)
(Jr, DB – Somerset, NJ)

Reid led the Lions with 12 tackles, including eight solos, while adding a pass break-up. The junior defender also became Lincoln’s all-time leader in blocked kicks with his blocked extra-point attempt vs. Lock Haven.
