Crosby records triple-double as Braves rout Champion Christian
LORMAN, Miss. – 
A historic night for Troymain Crosby saw the sophomore register 18 points, 10 rebounds 10 assists to headline a 109-45 drubbing for the Alcorn State University men’s basketball program over Champion Christian on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Crosby becomes just the second student-athlete in the history of Braves (3-6) basketball to finish with a triple-double and the first since Eddie Archie against Prairie View A&M in 1983. Crosby is also just the fourth Alcorn men’s basketball player to ever dish out 10 assists in a single game and the first since Alleo Frazier against Jackson State in 2003. Jeff Cammon also did it against Grambling State in 2002, and Archie four times.

Alcorn’s Devon Brewer ended with a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior Reginal Johnson neared a double-double with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds.

Five Braves scored in double-figures. Juniors Deshaw Andrews and Maurice Howard poured in 17 points apiece. Howard also distributed seven assists.

Alcorn shot .519 (41-79) from the floor and .452 (14-31) from long range. They held Champion Christian to a .274 (17-62) shooting mark and .200 (5-25) from beyond-the-arc.

CCC had three student-athletes score 11 points including Austin Hall, Vernon Burns and Tarrance Davis.

The game was close early with Alcorn up 16-13 when it reeled off eight straight points including a pair of lay-ups by Crosby to lead 24-11 midway through the half. A 17-4 run extended it to 41-17 with 1:46 remaining as Andrews was starting to find his rhythm inside. Alcorn led 46-22 at the break after a buzzer beater inside by Crosby, and the Braves cruised from there.

Reed dominates as Texas Southern blows out Concordia
HOUSTON – 
Texas Southern center Trayvon Reed scored early and often en route to leading the Texas Southern Tigers to a 107-70 win over Concordia on Saturday night.

Reed only missed one shot during the game as he went 14-of-15 good for 32 points while also securing eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Jeremy Combs (18), Devocio Butler (14), Tyrik Armstrong (13), and John Jones (12) rounded out the list of Texas Southern double digit contributors.

Texas Southern led 55-36 at intermission before adding 52 second half points. Combs and Butler each posted 12 rebounds notching double-doubles in the process.

For the game Texas Southern shot an impressive 67.2 percent from the field while limiting Concordia to just 36 percent from the floor.

Foul trouble, cold snap in second half dooms Grambling at UCF
ORLANDO, Fla. – 
The Grambling State University men’s basketball team battled foul trouble and went over five minutes without a bucket in the second half as Central Florida proved to be too much in a 70-45 loss to the Knights at CFE Arena.

The Tigers trailed 24-23 late in the first half, but the Knights closed out the period on a 6-0 run and took a 30-23 lead into the break. Central Florida took advantage of the foul trouble midway of the second half and put together a 19-8 run as Grambling State could not recover down the stretch.

Grambling State also suffered foul troubles throughout the game as Travon Bunch fouled out. Zavier Peart, Axel Mpoyo and Devante Jackson each finished with four fouls.

Dallas Polk-Hilliard paced Grambling State with 13 points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist. Lasani Johnson and Axel Mpoyo each recorded a team-high six rebounds.

B.J.  Taylor led Central Florida with a game-high 21 points, including going 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. He also added five rebounds and one steal. Aubrey Dawkins registered 11 points, eight boards, two steals and one assist, while Tacko Fall tallied eight rebounds and a game-high five blocks, along with seven points.

QUICK HITS

  • UAPB fell 55-45 to UC-Santa Barbara Saturday evening. Martaveous McKnight had another solid night, scoring a team-best 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting. However, the senior was the lone Golden Lions player to score in double figures for the second straight game. Amadou Sow led UCSB with 12 points and 11 rebounds. UAPB lost its footing thanks to an 23-7 UCSB run to open the second half that turned a three-point deficit into a 19-point hole that was ultimately too much to overcome.
     
  • Jackson State fell just shy of an upset at Pepperdine, falling 69-66. Jontrell Walker led the Tigers with 15 points, and Venjile Wallis added 11 points. Jayveous McKinnis pulled down 11 rebounds and scored eight points. Colbey Ross led Pepperdine with 21 points, six assists and five rebounds, and Darnell Dunn added 17 points. Jackson State led by as many as eight in the second half, but Pepperdine surged ahead via an 11-2 run, and the Tigers were unable to regain the lead despite staying within one possession for much of the half.
