DeMar DeRozan on the impact of Kobe Bryant’s sneakers

Check out this article from NEWS4SA in San Antonio that speaks with DeMar DeRozan as he shares his thoughts on the of Kobe Bryant’s signature line.

SAN ANTONIO — The “5-rings” Kobe shoes are back.

These shoes, first worn by Kobe Bryant on the opening night of the 2010-2011 season, were on full display during this year’s NBA championship games. This time it was Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis who wore them for Games 3 and 4 of the 2020 Finals as a way to commemorate the late Bryant.

A group of players, including San Antonio Spurs’ DeMar DeRozan, wore a player exclusive (PE) edition of the Kobe 5 out in the NBA bubble and discussed it with The Undefeated.

The 4s and 5s were low-tops that really transcended the game to a different level.

I was always a fan of the Kobes at a different level. I wore the 5s [my rookie year]they were a lighter shoe.

On what he was hoping to express through the PE, DeRozan wanted to put a story behind the colors of his shoe. To him, the colorways are important to aid in his story.

“A lot of times I ask my kids their favorite cartoon or something we talk about, and I’ll lean towards that type of colorway.”

Wearing Kobes now versus before January (the month that Bryant was killed), DeRozan called it a crazy feeling. He recalls what it felt like to receive the call that informed him about Bryant’s death.

“I had the Big Stage Kobe 5 Protros and I was going to be the first one to wear those that night. It was just crazy.”

DeRozan notes Kobe’s line ranks up there with Jordan sneaker line.

“It’s going to be up there with Jordan. From his legacy to how the changed the game of footwear, just like Jordan did beforehand.

What say you Spurs fans? Where do Kobe sneakers rank in sneaker history?
