Denzel Horsch’s big night powers Fayetteville State to 94-88 OT win

Fayetteville, N.C. – Denzell Hosch (Shelby, N.C.) had a banner game in Capel Arena as Fayetteville State defeated Johnson C. Smith 94-88 in overtime for FSU’s 10th Annual Ball in Pink game on national television.

Hosch put up a career high 45 points in 38 minutes played. To top this accomplishment, Hosch tied the previous school record that he set last season with ten three-pointers made in a game. On November 26, 2017, Denzell scored 34 points against West Florida with 10-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc. Today, again he went 10-of-16 but he added a perfect 9-for-9 free throws with an additional three field goals.

Fayetteville State improves to 5-16 overall and 4-10 in the CIAA with the sweep over the Golden Bulls. The victory also sets the Broncos Southern division record to 3-3. Johnson C. Smith drops to 7-14, 4-10, and 2-3.

JaQuel Richmond (Greensboro, N.C.) hit 15 points and Markeise Crutchfield (Durham, NC) scored 12.

Fayetteville State had a horrific start trailing 21-1 at the 11:37 mark of the first half. Hosch scored the Broncos first field goal with a three-ball at the 10:53 mark and helped stop the bleeding with a 17-point half as the Broncos trailed 41-33 at intermission. Denzell was 5-of-7 in threes with two free throws.

Fayetteville State opened the second half with back-to-back threes from Richmond and Joshua Bryant. Mark Burton (Tokyo, Japan) gave FSU a one-point (42-41) lead when he made all three free throws after being fouled when attempting a three-pointer. Richmond capped the 11-0 run with a fast break layup at the 17:50 mark.

Fayetteville State held an eight-point lead (76-68) with a little over four minutes left in regulation when the Golden Bulls put together an 8-0 run to send the game into an overtime period.

Hosch scored nine points in the extra period to give FSU an 85-79 lead with 2:20 left. Fayetteville State made 10-of-11 free throws in the extra time to secure the victory.

Fayetteville State will host the divisional leader Livingstone on Wednesday, February 13th at 5:30 p.m.

Cayse Minor led the Golden Bulls with 23 points and Roddric Ross tallied 22. Justice Goodloe and Michael Roberson finished with 15 and 11, respectfully.
