FAMU women’s hoops goes down to Howard 72-58

WASHINGTON, D.C. | Alaina Rice scored a team-high 22 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Florida A&M University women’s basketball team fell on the road to Howard, 72-58, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium.

Rice finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals as she was 4-for-8 from behind the 3-point line. Kailya Jackson added nine points and four rebounds, while Corey Staples registered seven points, four boards, two steals and one assist. Kayla Massop led the Lady Rattlers (4-14 overall, 2-5 MEAC) with 10 rebounds. Shalaunda Burney-Robinson was limited to 10 minutes due to foul trouble as she pulled down five boards.

Ayonna Williams led the Bison (11-8, 3-3) with 25 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Kristen Marsh registered 16 points and seven rebounds, while Gia Thorpe added 11 points. Iyanna Warren finished with 10 points.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED

The first quarter was tightly played, with Howard holding a two-point lead, 13-11, after the first 10 minutes. The Bison turned up the heat in the second stanza, outpacing FAMU, 22-10 to take a 35-21 halftime lead.

FAMU came out of the locker room on fire, outscoring the Bison, 18-14, in the third period, cutting the Howard lead to 10 points, 49-39.

But the Bison managed to hold off the Lady Rattlers with a 23-19 scoring jag in the final stanza the close out the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

> FAMU finished the game shooting 36.0 percent (18-of-50) from the floor and 36.8 percentage (7-of-19) from distance 

> In the third quarter, FAMU shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) and 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from distance, allowing them to close the gap some on Howard

> Howard finished the day shooting 33.0 percent (24-of-72) from the floor and only 21.4 percent (3-of-14) beyond the arc

> FAMU won the rebounding battle, 45-39, but hurt their cause in the turnover battle, with 33 miscues to 20 for Howard, who scored 30 points off those Lady Rattler giveaways

WHO’S GOT NEXT

Florida A&M returns to action on Monday with a trip to Norfolk State. Tip-off against the Spartans is set for 4 p.m.
