Grambling and Louisiana Tech to meet in “Buddy Bowl”

GRAMBLING, La I The Grambling State University football team is set to take on I-20 neighbors, Louisiana Tech in the ‘Buddy Bowl’ at Joe Aillet Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. 

Grambling State will broadcast the game on the Grambling State Sports Radio Network. The Tigers’ broadcast crew of Santoria Black, Ossie Clark, Leon Thomas and Nick Harrison will call all of the action. The game can be heard in Ruston (La.) (KPCH 99.3 FM – the Peach) and will be streaming online at www.gsutigers.com. Additionally, the game seen live on the NFL Sports Network: Rhett Lewis (play by play), Max Starks (analyst), Molly Sullivan (sideline). 

Grambling State and Louisiana Tech are only separated by five miles but Saturday’s match-up will be the second time the two teams are meeting. The first and only meeting came in 2010. Tech won, 20-6, at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. 

Saturday’s game will be the ‘Buddy Bowl’ which will pay homage to Orville Kince (O.K. “Buddy”) Davis, a Ruston native who covered the Tigers and the Bulldogs in the Ruston Daily Leader. Davis passed away at age 72 on July 13, in Ruston, Louisiana. 

The Tigers (0-1) are coming off a 31-9 loss in their season opener against Louisiana Monroe at Malone Stadium. In last Saturday’s match up the Tigers missed out on scoring opportunities due to penalties in the red zone, a missed field goal early in the first quarter and a blocked PAT after Lyndon Rash’s first collegiate touchdown in the dwindling seconds of the first quarter. The game was as close as the Tigers trailing 7-6 at the end of the first.

Geremy Hickbottom who’s in his second season as the starting quarterback completed 18-of-31 of his passes for 157 yards and one touchdown in last Saturday’s match-up. Keilon elder led the running game averaging13.7 yards on six carries. De’Vante Davis (5-44), Quinton Guice(1-34),Jakarie Nichols(2-37) led in receiving.  

Louisiana Tech (0-1) comes into the competition with a 45-14 loss to Texas at Texas Memorial Stadium. Similar to the Tigers, the Bulldogs were granted opportunities to score but missed out on the opportunities including two missed field goals in the first half. Tech registered more passing yards, with less penalties than Texas, and ultimately won time of possession but wasn’t able to execute scoring. 

J’Mar Smith started in pocket for the Bulldogs throwing 331 yards, two touchdowns on one interception. 

What to Watch For
> The Bulldogs have won their last four consecutive home openers
> This will be the teams’ first match up in Lincoln Parish

Grambling State- Louisiana Tech Connections
> Grambling State and Louisiana Tech’s first and only meeting came in 2010. Tech won 20-6 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La.

After a trip to Joe Aillet Stadium, Grambling State will have an open week, followed by a trip to Montgomery, Ala. to kick-off Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play against Alabama State. Kick-off from ASU Stadium on Sept. 21 is set for 2:30 p.m.
