Grambling State lady tigers lose key SWAC game at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss.  The Grambling State University women’s basketball team suffered a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) loss on Saturday, 89-60, to Jackson State at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Activity Center.

Grambling State (12-14 overall, 9-5 SWAC) trailed, 23-19, at the end of the first period and fell behind, 49-32, at the half. Jackson State (12-13, 8-6) continued to be in full control and took a 66-47 advantage into the final quarter.

Jazmin Boy led Grambling State with 15 points, three rebounds and one steal, while Shakyla Hill added 13 points, seven assists, six boards, four steals and one blocked shot. Hill is currently tied with Shiakiea Carter for the SWAC and school record for career steals.

Marneisha Harmer paced Jackson State with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds, along with one assist and one steal. Kaisah Lucky registered 15 points and eight assists, while Christina Ellis chipped in 13 points, five assists, two steals and two boards. Antoinette Womack and Taylor Lattimore added 10 points apiece. 

Turning Point

Jackson State led 23-19 at the end of the first quarter, but Grambling State kept the game close and cut the margin to 27-24 after a Mylashia Yancey bucket with 7:41 left in the second period.

JSU slowly started to pull away and used a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to take a commanding 41-27 advantage.

Grambling State got a bucket by Takerra Parsons with 48 seconds remaining, but a Christina Ellis jumper sent Jackson State into the break with a 49-32 advantage.

Jackson State opened the third period strong and took a 56-35 lead after a layup by Sumer Williams with 8:16 remaining.

Grambling State refused to go away quietly and closed the gap to 66-52 after a three-point play by Shakyla Hill with 9:27 left.

That would be as close as GSU would get down the stretch as Jackson State picked up the conference win.

> Grambling State was 20-of-60 (33.3 percent) shooting and 15-of-25 (60.0 percent) from the charity stripe
> Jackson State shot 56.5 percent (35-of-62) from the field and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the free-throw line

> GSU registered 28 rebounds, including 14 on the defensive glass

> JSU pulled down 47 rebounds, with 30 coming on the defensive end

> Grambling State finished with 24 points in the paint, 23 bench points, 17 points off 24 JSU turnovers, eight second-chance points and six fastbreak points

> Jackson State tallied 47 bench points, 40 points in the paint, 23 points off 23 GSU turnovers, 19 second-chance points and 10 fastbreak points
