Howard overcomes Bethune-Cookman with Newton late game heroics

With less than two minutes to go, Howard freshman sensation quarterback Caylin Newton engineered a 9-play, 45-yard drive that was culminated in Newton himself scoring the go-ahead score on a 5-yard TD tun, putting the Bison up for good 26-24.

In the first quarter the Wildcats took 7-0 lead after a 7-play, 56 yard drive was capped off by a Larry Brihm 20 yard touchdown run. Howard answered back when a few seconds into the second quarter when Guy Lemonier Jr. recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Bethune responded on their very next drive, going 70 yards in 11 plays, ending in another touchdown run from Larry Brihm, this time a 23 yarder. Howard would tie the game right before the half on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Caylin Newton to Anthony Philyaw.

The Bison came out after halftime and went right to work, embarking on a 9-play, 74 yard drive that ended in a 1-yard sneak from Newton. The PAT was missed, leaving the score 20-14. Cookman came back on their opening drive of the second half, going 55-yards in 6 plays, tying the game on Que’shaun Byrd’s 24-yard touchdown run. The PAT gave the Wildcats a 21-20 lead. B-CU would add to their lead later in the quarter with a Uriel Hernandez 42-yard field goal, taking the score to 24-20.

This lead would stand until Newton and the HU offense worked its magic late in the game.

Howard piled up 500 total yards of offense, with a whopping 343 of that coming on the ground, with five Bison tallying 50 or more yards. Caylin Newton finished 12-25 for 157 yards and a pick and 140 yards and two TD’s on the ground. Anthony Philyaw chipped in with 93 yards and Dezmond Wortham tallied 129 all-purpose yards.

Howard, after a bye,will host MEAC reigning champs, North Carolina Central University at 1PM EST. B-CU will host Savannah State next week. Kickoff time is 4 PM EST.
