Indianapolis Colts LB Edwin Jackson killed by drunk driver

The sports world was still reeling from the untimely and tragic death of former NBA basketballer Rasual Butler and his wife last week, and on the day of Super Bowl LII (52) the sporting world has another tragedy to befall it.

Early Sunday morning , Indianapolis Colts’ linebacker Edwin Jackson was one of two people killed when they were hit by an alleged drunk driver. According to police reports, Jackson and Jeffrey Monroe,54, were pronounced dead following an car crash along I-70 I Indiana shortly before 4a.m. Sunday morning.

‘It’s thought Monroe was driving Jackson and pulled over to the side of the road because Jackson got sick. When Monroe got out of the car to assist him, they were both struck by the oncoming vehicle. The driver of said vehicle, a pickup truck, was identified as 37-year-old Alex Cabrera Gonsales of Indianapolis. Mr. Gonsales attempted to flee on foot but was later caught and taken to a local jail. He was thought to be driving the truck not only without a license but under the influence of alcohol as well.

The Colts issued the following statement:

We were heartbroken to hear the news of Edwin Jackson’s passing. Edwin was loved by all in the Colts organization. We admired his outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality. He was well-respected among all with whom he crossed paths, and he will be greatly missed in our locker room and throughout our entire organization. We also understand that another person lost his life in the accident, only adding to our sorrow on this day. We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of both men during this difficult time.

Edwin Jackson played one season for the Colts, playing in all 16 games and recording 42 tackles and 2 sacks. He missed the entire 2017 season after being placed on IR in September.
