Jackson State used big plays on offense and special teams to cruise to a 38-16 victory in front of crowd of 46, 171 at the 32nd Southern Heritage Classic.
JSU got the scoring going when Shadeur Sanders connected with Josh Lanier on a 14- yard touchdown pass late in the opening quarter. Tennessee State would respond with what would prove to be a rare stretch of offensive competency and effectiveness, putting together a 14-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a 2-yard touchdown run from Daveon Bryant.
Jackson State took a 10-7 lead into intermission off the foot of a 28-yard Glenn Misiak field goal.
Sloppy and arm-tackling began to rear its ugly head for the TSU defense early in the third quarter and it was the catalyst for a 67-yard touchdown pass from Sanders to Keith Corbin III that was laden with missed stop attempts, putting 17-7. Jackson State added another score in the period, another Sanders touchdown pass, this one a 10-yard connection to Shane Hooks to put them up 24-7 heading into the fourth quarter. Sanders was magnificent on the day, completing 30 of his 40 pass attempts for 362 yards in addition to the three scores.
A 37-yard Chayil Garnett field goal kept TSU’s hopes on life support, cutting the lead to 24-10 early in the quarter. Those hopes were completely dashed five minutes later by a Warren Newman 81-yard punt return to put the Tigers of Jackson up 31-10.
Jackson State tacked on another score via a Peyton Prickett, who racked up 33 of his 64 rushing yards in the fourth, 4-yard touchdown run to make the score 38-10.
TSU added a cosmetic touchdown, a 47-yard bomb from quarterback Geremy Hickbottom and the subsequent missed extra point brought the final score to 38-16.
Jackson State (2-0, 1-0 SWAC) hits the road next week for their first-ever meeting with UL-Monroe, which will air on ESPN3. Tennessee State (0-2) will play host to the SIAC’s Kentucky State as they try to solve their offensive issues and get that all-important first win in the Eddie George era.
