MOBILE, AL – The Kentucky State University women’s basketball team shook off a disastrous start to come back and post a 63-60 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Spring Hill Monday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.

Kentucky State missed nine of its first 10 shots, while Spring Hill connected on seven of its first 11 shots, and when head coach Terrance Slater called a timeout – the Thorobreds trailed 17-2. However, that would be the largest KSU deficit.

The Thorobreds trailed by 10 at the end of the first quarter, and the deficit was 12 before a Kentucky State went on a run.

Junior Jessie Kee (Indianapolis, IN) hit back-to-back jumpers and assisted on another as the ‘Breds quickly scored seven consecutive to pull to within four. However, the KSU deficit was back to eight at the break.

Turnabout was fair play for the start of the second half as Kentucky State started the third quarter on a run much like the game-opening Badgers spurt. The Thorobreds scored 18 of the first 21 points of the quarter, transforming an eight-point halftime deficit to a seven-point lead.

The lead grew to as much as 11 points, 63-52, with 4:30 remaining in the contest.

It was the last time Kentucky State scored, but its defense enabled the Thorobreds to record the victory. Spring Hill didn’t get a shot off in the last 78 seconds and committed a pair of turnovers.

Kee finished with 20 points, eclipsing the plateau for the second straight time and for the third time this season. She added eight rebounds and three assists. Junior Amani Williams (Scotch Plains, NJ) added 14 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists, while junior Kiante Butts (Memphis, TN) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.

Kentucky State (12-10 overall, 5-8 SIAC) preps for the SIAC’s Rivalry Week as the Thorobreds play at Central State 1 p.m. Saturday before returning to the William Exum Center 5:30 p.m. Monday.
