Luka Doncic says gold medal would be more meaningful than NBA title

Luka Doncic has his priorities straight when it comes to success with the national team or in the NBA

Luka Doncic has already experienced huge success whether it’s with the clubs, the national team, or the individual level. He’s won most of the things despite being just 22 years old and perhaps the only thing that’s missing in his trophy case is an NBA championship and an MVP award while chasing it.

However, if he had to choose, Doncic, who has already won the 2017 EuroBasket with Slovenia, would prefer a gold medal with the national team rather than winning the NBA.

“I would say gold medal with Slovenia. You play for your country and that’s something really, really (special)… But I wouldn’t mind both,” Luka added with a slight smile at the end.

That would be especially true if the gold medal came from the Olympics but it will also be a great success for Doncic and Slovenia to just secure a spot in the biggest sporting event.

“It would be amazing. It would be a dream to be in the Olympics. Not just for me, the whole federation of Slovenia and the whole country. They really cheer for us. I hope we get to that because we really want to,” he said and added that he misses the atmosphere of European and national team basketball.

“Yes, especially the national team basketball. Every country cheers for their players and that’s something amazing. That’s what all countries have and that’s what basketball is about. About fans enjoying basketball and cheering for their team.”

Luka’s been accumulating a historic number of triple-doubles in the NBA but that hasn’t been happening often in FIBA competitions. That said, he doesn’t really care as long as his team wins. “It’s not something I think about. We gotta win and it’s all that matters to me.”

Doncic will have a chance to make his dreams come true in the Olympics but only if Slovenia manages to get past one final hurdle, and that is facing Lithuania in the Qualifying Tournament Final, scheduled for July 4 at 18:30 CET.
