MEAC Men’s Basketball Week 1 Player Honours

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 1, 2020 — North Carolina Central redshirt senior guard C.J. Keyser is the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s basketball Player of the Week for the 2020-21 season, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced today. Meanwhile, redshirt seniors Anthony Tarke of Coppin State and J.J. Matthews of Norfolk State are the Co-Defensive Players of the Week. Kenan Sarvan of Coppin State is the MEAC Rookie of the Week.

C.J. Keyser (G, 6-3, r-Sr., Baltimore, Md.) had impressive showings in leading the Eagles with a career-high 33 points along with two steals, one blocked shot and one assist in an 85-78 win over Southern on Thursday. A day earlier, Keyser netted 15 points in a loss to No. 5 Iowa.

Anthony Tarke (G, 6-6, r-Sr., Gaithersburg, Md.) had a team-high nine rebounds, two blocked shots and five steals as the Eagles gave No. 9 Duke a scare before falling 81-71 on Thanksgiving Day in Durham, N.C. His five steals are a new career high.

J.J. Matthews ( Norfolk State Men’s Basketball)

Matthews (F, 6-9, r-Sr., Richmond, Va.) had an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double in Norfolk State’s 83-73 victory over James Madison on Friday, a contest in which he also had two steals and two blocked shots. For a week that also saw the Spartans defeat Radford, Matthews averaged 10.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocked shots and 1.0 steal.

Sarvan (F, 6-10, r-Fr., Heeze, Netherlands) was solid in his collegiate debut at Duke, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds. He added one steal.

Other Top Performers
DeJuan Clayton (CSU) 
scored 22 points on 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line against Duke. His point total moved him into 11th place on Coppin State’s all-time scoring list with 1,302 points.
 
Rahim Ali Jr. (HOW) averaged 9.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals in the Bison’s three games during the week.
 
Kyle Foster (HOW) averaged 12.3 points, 1.3 assists and 1.0 rebounds in a busy week that saw the Howard Bison fall to Belmont, Queens and George Mason.
 
Malik Miller (MSU) scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Morgan State Bears’ 62-55 loss to Mount St. Mary’s on November 25.  He connected on 8-of-12 shots from the floor in the contest.
 
Kameron Langley (NCAT) dished out 11 assists and grabbed nine rebounds 11 assists in a 74-44 win over Chicago State. For the week, he averaged 6.0 points, 7.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds in three games.
 
Nicolas Fennell (NCCU) averaged 10.0 points, 4.5 rebounds 1.5 assists and 1.0 blocked shot in the Eagles’ games against Iowa and Southern. He had 12 points with seven rebounds against Iowa.
 
Kashaun Hicks (NSU) averaged 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in the Spartans’ victories over James Madison and Radford. He had 13 points with four rebounds against JMU as well as 12 points with four boards versus Radford.
