Morgan’s Joshua Miles and NC A&T’s Darryl Johnson Jr taken in NFL Draft

North Carolina A&T State defensive end Darryl Johnson Jr. and Morgan State offensive tackle Joshua Miles were both selected in the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.

Johnson, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Year who helped lead the Aggies to back-to-back MEAC championships and Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl titles, was picked up in the seventh round on Saturday by the Buffalo Bills. He was the 225th overall pick.

He led the MEAC in sacks this past season with 10.5, nearly a sack a game on average. Johnson also led the conference in tackles for loss with 19.0 total (15 solo), averaging just over 1.5 tackles for loss per game, and he was a big reason why the Aggies held opponents to just 14.2 points per game in 2018 — leading the MEAC in both scoring defense and total defense.

The Aggies were third nationally in total defense and fifth in scoring defense this past season.

This marks the third straight year in which an Aggie went in the NFL Draft. In 2017, Tarik Cohen was selected by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round, and offensive lineman Brandon Parker went to the Oakland Raiders in the third round last year.

Miles went 23 picks later to the Arizona Cardinals. He is the first Bear to be selected in the draft since Visanthe Shiancoe was drafted by the New York Giants in 2003.

Miles, a 6-foot-5, 314-pound Baltimore, Md. product, played both tackle and guard positions at Morgan State. He was an All-MEAC performer for the Bears, played in the East-West Shrine game and was a participant in the NFL Scouting Combine.
