NBA divulges why it changed on court sneaker policy

Last week it was reported the NBA was significantly altering the rules on sneakers. Beginning with the 2018-19 season the league will allow players to wear any color shoes at any point through the season.

In providing a rationale as to why the NBA changed course on this matter, NBA Senior VP of Identity, Outfitting & Equipment Christopher Arena had this to SoleCollector:

We’ve evolved our guidelines to allow players to display colors on their sneakers that reflect their team colors or any other colors that allow them to express their focus for a particular game.

It appears when the season begins October 16, the audacious or meaningful colorways will not be limited to special occasions like All-Star games and certain holidays.

To the colorists at the various sneaker companies, the shackles have been removed. Don’t let us down.
