NBL21 Free Agency: DJ Newbill inks deal in Japan

From nbl.com.au:

NBL20’s Best Defensive Player DJ Newbill has signed in Japan with Osaka Evessa for the coming season.

The Club made the announcement official with a release on their website and social media channels.

Newbill has spent the past three seasons in the NBL, his first with the New Zealand Breakers followed by two years with the Cairns Taipans.

The lockdown defender was a key cog in the Taipans run to the Finals in NBL20, averaging 18.5 points and 1.3 steals per game.

Newbill was rewarded for his strong play in NBL20 after being voted Best Defensive Player at The Gazeys.

Changes to the NBL21 player contracting arrangements resulted in teams being limited to two Restricted Players (imports) as opposed to the three in prior seasons, with the Taipans posed the tough task of attempting to retain two of their dynamic trio.

The Taipans previously indicated that despite reports of Scott Machado re-signing, no deal has been finalised with negotiations ongoing.

On Free Agency Market Watch , Liam Santamaria reported that interest in Cam Oliver from European teams was growing, however should the standout big man return to the NBL he expected it to be with the Taipans.
