PRAIRIE VIEW, TX – Sophomore quarterback Ladarius Skelton totaled 370 total yards of offense as the Pine Bluff, Ark. native completed 15-of-26 passes for 168 yards with one touchdown and led the Jaguars rushing attack with a 202-yard performance and three touchdowns on 27 carries including a long of 56 yards as Southern (3-3 overall, 2-1 SWAC) earned their first shutout victory since November 19, 2016 when the team blanked Mississippi Valley State.

The Southern run attack was highly efficient as the Jaguars ran 59 times for 350 yards as a collective unit, an average of 5.9 yards per carry.  Redshirt sophomore Devon Benn had 17 totes for 57 yards while sophomore Kendall Catalon added three rushes for 52 yards including a 25-yarder for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Panthers redshirt junior quarterback Jalen Morton competed 20-of-42 passes for 251 yards, but was marred by turnover trouble as he tossed a season-high five interceptions.  Southern’s Jakoby Pappillion picked off two of those passes while Montavius Gaines, Demario Houston, and Caleb Carter each had one interception.  Carter led the Jaguars with seven tackles.

Dawonya Tucker, the SWAC’s leading rusher entering the day, was held to just 10 carries for 17 yards and two receptions for 10 yards.

Anthony Stubbs and Willie Green each led the Prairie View A&M defense with 13 tackles apiece and combined for two sacks and two tackles for a loss.  The Panthers lost their first conference game and dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Quick hits

  • Alcorn State redshirt junior quarterback Noah Johnson completed 16-of-27 passes for 160 yards with a touchdown and added 15 carries for 154 rushing yards with a touchdown on the ground.
  • Junior running back De’Shawn Waller continued his strong play.  After coming off consecutive SWAC Newcomer of the Week honors, the Atlanta, Ga. native ran the ball 21 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Alcorn State (5-2 overall, 3-1 SWAC) took control in the third quarter when the Braves outscored the Bulldogs 22-8 with two touchdowns from Waller, a 29-yard touchdown reception from Johnson to Dayall Harris and a seven-yard loss for a safety.
  • Alabama A&M quarterback Aqeel Glass completed 20-of-35 passes for 203 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, but the sophomore from St. Louis, Mo. took seven sacks for the Bulldogs (3-4 overall, 2-2 SWAC).
  • The Alcorn State defense did a solid job in slowing the Bulldogs run as Alabama A&M was held to 27 carries for 52 yards.
  • Fresh off being added to the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Watch List, Alabama A&M freshman Brian Jenkins Jr. caught four balls for 30 yards and scored another touchdown.
  • SWAC leading tackler Armoni Holloway led the Bulldogs defense with eight tackles including a half a tackle for a loss.
  • Jackson State quarterback Jarrad Hayes completed 16-of-22 passes for 129 yards with one touchdown and added a rushing touchdown to lead the Tigers (3-2 overall, 2-1 SWAC) over the Delta Devils (0-5, 0-2 SWAC).
  • Jackson State running Jordan Johnson led the team with 22 carries for 134 yards.
  • Jackson State kicker Christian Jacquemin was a perfect 2-of-2 on field goal attempts and 3-for-3 on extra point kicks.  He is now 10-of-11 on the season in field goals and is 8-of-9 in extra point kicks.
  • Jackson State converted all four of their red zone opportunities and now have won consecutive conference games.
  • The Tigers defense held Mississippi Valley State offense to just 194 total yards of offense.
  • Delta Devils senior wide receiver Booker Chambers led the receiving core with seven receptions for 74 yards while John Derrick Smith scored a touchdown on a 24-yard grab from junior quarterback Dejerric Bryant.
  • Tyrek Allen scored the lone touchdown for Alabama State on a 75-yard pass from KHA’Darr Harris in the second quarter.
  • Alabama State (2-4 overall, 1-1 SWAC) trailed 28-7 by halftime and were outgained 396-218 in total yards of offense.
  • The Hornets defense was led by Darron Johnson, who had a team-high nine tackles and one tackle for a loss.  Damyo Williams had eight tackles and two tackles for a loss.
  • Alabama State punter Anthony Craven had a big night, punting seven times for an average of 45.9 yards per kick with a long of 80 yards and three kicks inside the 20-yard line.
  • Grambling State quarterback Geremy Hickbottom completed 29-of-44 passes for 345 yards with three touchdowns and added 79 rushing yards to lead the Tigers (3-3 overall, 2-1 SWAC).
  • Grambling State wide receiver Devante Davis led the Tigers with seven receptions for 114 yards with a 24-yard touchdown in the third quarter.  Davis opened the scoring as well with a scooped-up ball returned for a touchdown after a blocked punt by Joseph McWilliams.
  • The first half saw a total of six turnovers (Texas Southern – two fumbles and one interception; Grambling State – two interceptions and one fumble) and a blocked Texas Southern punt. Between the two teams, those turnovers and the special teams block resulted in all the points scored in the first half (21).
  • Texas Southern wide receiver Bobby Hartzog registered a game-high 190 yards on nine receptions and one score.
  • Southern, Prairie View A&M and Grambling State are all now tied at 2-1 in the SWAC West Division standings.  Southern holds the tie-breaker head-to-head with Prairie View A&M after their win today against them while Prairie View holds the tie-breaker against Grambling State after defeating them earlier this season.  Southern and Grambling State will play on Nov. 24 in the Bayou Classic from New Orleans, La.
