Pelicans’ Guard Bryce Dejean-Jones succumbs to gunshot wound

Dallas police announce New Orleans Pelicans guard was fatally shot after kicking in a door to an apartment.

In a statement, Sr Cpl DeMarquis Black said officers were called early Saturday morning and found Jones collapsed in an outdoor passageway’ the 23-year old ball player was taken to a hospital, where he died. Cpl. Black also stated a person living at the apartment was asleep when he heard his door kicked open. The resident then retrieved his firearm and fired when Jones attempted to kick down his bedroom door.

Bryce Jones died today after being shot when we he was attempting to kick in an apartment door.

According to an email that Camden Belmont Apartments sent to its residents Saturday morning, the individual later identified as Dejean-Jones was “believed to be breaking into the apartment of an estranged acquaintance (but) inadvertently broke into the wrong apartment.”

The Pelicans released the following statement in lieu of this event:

“It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones,” the Pelicans said in a statement. “We are devastated at the loss of this young man’s life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce’s family during this difficult time.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement regarding Jones’ death:

“The NBA family mourns the tragic loss of New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones,” he said. “Bryce inspired countless people with his hard work and perseverance on his journey to the NBA, and he had a bright future in our league. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Bryce’s family and the entire Pelicans organization during this difficult time.”

We are deeply saddened to learn the tragic news about Bryce. I’m grateful that our paths crossed in this life. Bryce was a passionate and talented player that lived out his dream of playing in the NBA through hard work and perseverance. It’s an incredibly sad day for me and all of Iowa State University. It is not clear , at this point, why Jones, was in Dallas. In in his one injury shortened NBA Season, he averaged 5.6 ppg and 3.4 rpg.
