Army 52, Morgan State 21

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Not even a 31-point victory was enough to put a smile on Army coach Jeff Monken’s face.

Army rushed for six touchdowns and a season-high 403 yards on Saturday, but had to overcome some sloppy play that included two lost fumbles and seven penalties to beat struggling Morgan State 52-21.

The Bears, who compete in the Championship Subdivision, haven’t won a nonconference road game since a 28-3 win over Bowie State five years ago, but they led the Black Knights 14-7 early in the game before fading.

“I didn’t think that was up to our standards,” Monken said. “That’s as much to do with me as any individual player. Good enough to win the game, not good enough against everyone else we play. We’ve got to do better.”

Artice Hobbs IV scored twice and Connor Slomka rushed for a career-high 110 yards and another score to pace the Army ground game. But Morgan State (0-3), which started the season with two bad road losses — 46-3 to Bowling Green and 63-12 to FCS power James Madison —under new coach Tyrone Wheatley, stunned Army with two straight scores in the first quarter after the Black Knights had gained a 7-0 lead on a 9-yard run by Hobbs.

DeAndre Harris hit Manasseh Bailey with a 69-yard touchdown pass down the middle on a third-and-14 play to tie the game with 5:32 left in the first. Four plays later, Army quarterback Jabari Laws was blindsided and fumbled and Malachi Washington recovered for the Bears. Jabriel Johnson scored on a 25-yard run on the next play for a 14-7 lead.

The lead didn’t last. It was a lead, nonetheless, against a better team.

Howard 24, Delaware State 9

Dover, Del. (Sep. 21, 2019) — Delaware State drove 84 yards for a touchdown on the game’s opening possession, but managed just 128 yards the rest of the way in a 24-9 homecoming loss to Howard in the MEAC opener for each team at Alumni Stadium this afternoon. The loss snapped a four-game home win streak for the Hornets, who fell to 1-2 overall, while the Bison won for the first time this season (1-3).

Howard quarterback Caylin Newton, the 2019 Preseason MEAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year, completed 21-of-35 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bison, although he was sacked four times and the Hornet defense allowed just 73 rushing yards in the contest.

Delaware State started quickly, marching down the field on nine plays on the opening possession to draw first blood. The drive was capped off by a two-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Tylik Bethea to Kwannah Kollie (jr.). Bryant Dallas (sr.) rushed for 30 yards on five carries, while Bethea and Kollie also connected on a 32 yard pass to the Howard three-yard-line during the drive.

Florida A&M 27, Southern 21

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Florida A&M University football team trailed early in the fourth quarter, but a Ryan Stanley 17-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Smith capped the rally as the Rattlers defeated Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe Southern, 27-21, in front of a packed house at Bragg Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The Rattlers (2-1) led 19-7 at the half, but watched Southern (1-3) score two second-half touchdowns to pull ahead, 21-19, with 14:53 remaining.
After both teams traded punts, Florida A&M took over at their own 19-yard line with 8:03 remaining. The Rattlers marched 81 yards as FAMU completed a 3rd-and-5 from the Southern 36 as Stanley connected with Kaleob Parker for five yards.

Three plays later, Smith caught the 17-yard strike from Stanley to give the Rattlers a 25-21 lead with 3:32 left. Instead of kicking the extra point, FAMU head coach Willie Simmons elected to go for the two-point conversions. Azende Rey found a diving Kamari Young in the endzone to give the Rattlers a 27-21 advantage.

On the ensuing Southern offensive possession, the Jaguars started on their own 9, but went backwards. After a false start penalty, Ladarius Skelton was sacked by Isaiah Land for a 2-yard loss and tackled for no gain as Florida A&M forced a punt.

Bethune-Cookman 22, Mississippi Valley State 6

ITTABENA, Miss. – What Bethune-Cookman will remember from this 21st night of September is a career half from Isaac Washington and a defensive effort that maintained the status quo as the Wildcats downed Mississippi Valley State 22-6 at Rice-Totten Stadium.

Washington rushed for 149 yards – 117 in the first half as the Wildcats (2-1) registered their eighth consecutive victory over a Southwest Athletic Conference opponent dating back to 2006 in their first appearance at the stadium where Jerry Rice played his college ball since 1968.

The Delta Devils (0-3) took a 6-2 lead on Jarius Clayton’s nine-yard pass from Dejeric Bryant with 25 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

BCU answered on Washington’s longest run of his career – a 57-yard burst that made it 9-6 with nine minutes remaining in the half. Later, Washington capped off an 84-yard drive with a 21-yard run that let the Wildcats take a 15-6 halftime lead.

The Wildcat offense struggled in the second half, managing just three total yards in the third quarter, but the defense stopped three potential scoring threats to preserve the lead.
