Southern Game Notes | Arkansas-Pine Bluff Game Notes

PINE BLUFF, Ark, – Southern will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff for its first Southwestern Athletic Conference game for the 2019 campaign on Saturday at Simmons Bank Field.  The game is scheduled for a national broadcast on ESPN3 with kickoff slated for 6:00 p.m.

With the score tied in the fourth quarter, Arkansas-Pine Bluff drove 75 yards in seven plays in the final 50 seconds for a victory over Tennessee State last week. Shannon Patrick’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Brown on the final play of the game resulted in a 37-31 win over the Tigers in the program’s first win over Tennessee State in five meetings.

Last week Southern fell short to Florida A&M in a 27-21 defeat. SU’s Ryan Stanley threw for 355 yards and two touchdowns as FAMU led by 12 at halftime but trailed 21-19 late in the fourth when Stanley took the Rattlers 97 yards in nine plays.

Azende Rey’s pass to Kamari Young made good on the two-point conversion. Florida A&M’s defense held firm on the ensuing Southern drive, sacking Southern QB Ladarius Skelton to help seal the win.

Skelton finished with 114 yards and a score for the Jaguars. Jamar Washington led the Jaguars with 109 yards off five receptions. Washington raced for 54 yards for a score off an 8-yard reception from Skelton.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s defense was led by safety Benjamin Harris with ten tackles. The Jaguars defense came alive in the second half forcing a game-high 9 tackle for loss, for a loss of 34 yards.

Southern is third in the SWAC in scoring, averaging 33.5 points per game. Pine Bluff native Ladarius Skelton keyed SU’s late season surge a year ago at quarterback and has thrown four touchdowns and rushed for two other scores this season.
