Stupid Things People Do For Sneakers: Prisoner charged with stealing fellow prsioner’s sneakers

Normally for these stories, going to jail is the end of the story but, for this edition of Stupid Things People Do For Sneakers, being incarcerated is just the start of the foolishness.

Todd M.McCabe, 43, a Level 3 sex offender , which are offenders considered by Massachusetts most likely to commit sex crimes again, with a wrap sheet a mile long was arrested back in October 2018 for an armed robbery of a GameStop. According to police, McCabe allegedly swiped an XBox and then threatened to stab the store associate with a pen. McCabe was indicted on a charge of armed robbery for the incident.

In the morning of October 10, 2018 a prisoner, Ulysses Jackson was brought to the courthouse in custody; he placed his sneakers outside of “Cell 14.” Later that same day McCabe was brought to the Worcester Trial Court by police and was put in cell near the aforementioned one after walking from the intake area with no shoes, according to a statement of facts compiled by Assistant Chief Court Officer David T. Deignan.

Assistant Chief Deignan writes that after several minutes had elapsed, Mr. McCabe was moved to another cell and “stepped into” Mr. Jackson’s sneakers. The statement goes on to further indicate that McCabe left the courthouse wearing Jackson’s sneakers and the video of the theft has been preserved.

McCabe was charged in Central District Court on a charge of larceny of property valued at less than $1,200. He was arraigned before Judge David B. Locke, who entered a not-guilty on McCabe’s behalf. The case was continued on personal recognizance.

According to court records, McCabe is currently serving a sentence at the Middlesex County House of Correction.

No word on the make and model of sneaker that McCabe pilfered.
