SWAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week – January 1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern University guard Jalyn Patterson has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The league made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Patterson, a 6-1 graduate transfer from Atlanta, Ga., scored a team-best 20 points along with five rebounds and five assists to lead Texas Southern to an 88-73 victory over Texas A&M on Dec. 29. Patterson, who shot 8-of-14 from the field and connected on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, was particularly effective in helping to close out the Aggies as he scored 14 points in the second half to help preserve the win.

Patterson currently sits third in the league in scoring at 15.1 points per night, a mark that is tops for the SWAC’s highest-scoring offense. He is also third in the conference in terms of three-pointers made per game (2.7) and is tied for the league lead in assists per game (4.4).

Other Notable Performances:
– Texas Southern center Trayvon Reed recorded a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks in the Tigers’ 88-73 win over Texas A&M.

– UAPB guard Martaveous McKnight dropped 22 points for the Golden Lions despite a 71-63 setback at Troy on Dec. 29.

– Alabama A&M guard Tre Todd averaged 16.0 points over the Bulldogs’ past two games, including a season-high 18 points versu Hawai’i.

– Jackson State’s Jontrell Walker scored 17 points to lead the Tigers to a 61-57 win over Miles College.
