BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After six years at the helm of the Texas Southern University women’s basketball program, Johnetta Hayes has been tabbed to be the next head coach of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

Hayes served as the head coach of Texas Southern University since the 2013-14 season after spending the 2012-13 season as the associate head coach of the Lady Tigers. Under her guidance, the Lady Tigers put together a 115-73 record over her time on the sidelines.

Hayes led Texas Southern to a pair of 20-win seasons and four postseason appearances. The Lady Tigers won three regular-season championships (2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17) during Hayes’ tenure as head coach, as Hayes was associate head coach during Texas Southern’s run to the 2012-13 regular season crown.

Additionally, TSU earned the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Hayes earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors following the 2014-15 season and coached 13 All-SWAC honorees as well as two SWAC Players of the Year, one SWAC Freshman of the Year, one SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and one SWAC Newcomer of the Year.

Prior to her time in Houston, Hayes spent two years on coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke’s staff at UNC-Wilmington as an assistant coach, during which the team put together back-to-back 20-win seasons that each culminated in NCAA Tournament appearances.

Hayes – a four-year letterwinner at Rice University and a first-team All-WAC player in 2003 — has also served as the head coach at Wiley (Texas) College (2006-08).

The Houston, Texas native is the ninth head coach in UMBC program history. Hayes will be formally introduced on April 29, six years to the day when she was introduced as the new coach of Texas Southern.
