With one week in the books on the 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s basketball season, six of the league’s eight programs that will be playing this season have already tipped things off — and four of those squads have already notched victories.

Howard was the most recent to get into the win column, taking care of Mount St. Mary’s on Monday evening behind 26 points from sharpshooter Jayla Thornton. Morgan State (over UMBC), Norfolk State (over Salem University) and North Carolina Central (in double-overtime over Campbell) also won this past week.

Thornton was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, sharing the honor with South Carolina States Heniaya Moton — who dropped 28 points and hit six threes against Coastal Carolina. Howard’s Anzhane’ Hutton went 8-for-9 from the floor and racked up 18 points to be named MEAC Rookie of the Week, and Anissa Rivera of NCCU was named Defensive Player of the Week after a 14-rebound, five-block effort against Campbell.

Delaware State will join the fray this week, starting with a Wednesday tip against in-state rival Delaware.

Coppin State, Delaware State, Norfolk State and South Carolina State are all slated to play twice this week, with the Lady Bulldogs staying home to face Winthrop on Wednesday and UNC Wilmington on Monday. The Lady Hornets will also be at home for Wednesday’s tilt against the Blue Hens and to face Rider on Saturday.

Morgan State will play host to Saint Peter’s on Saturday, looking to open the season 2-0 in Hill Field House.
