Week six of the 2019 football season saw the start of divisional matchups across the CIAA. With divisional play beginning, here’s a refresher on how division winners are determined:

The Northern and Southern Division winners will be determined by the highest winning percentage of conference games won based upon the seven-game conference schedule.

1.      In case of a tie between divisional teams, the winner shall be determined as follows:
    a.      Divisional Win Percentage
    b.      Head-to-Head Competition
    c.      Results vs. Common Conference Opponents (to include point differential)
    d.      Coin Toss

Now let’s recap this week’s action:

Virginia Union 62, Lincoln (PA) 0 FINAL

In a game that was one-sided from start to finish, Virginia Union went on the road for the second straight week and delivered a shutout defensively, defeating Lincoln (PA) 62-0.

Panthers quarterback Khalid Morris threw four first half touchdowns that included a 16-yard strike to Charles Hall on their opening drive of game as well as an 18-yarder to Tabyus Taylor in the second quarter. Taylor would also add a rushing touchdown later in the quarter.

VUU opened the second half with an 8-play, 61-yard drive that ended with another Taylor rushing touchdown (4 yards). The Panthers would go on to add 21 more second-half points that included a pair of Jefferson Souza field goals (32 and 49 yards) and another touchdown catch for Hall (28 yards), who finished with four catches for 122 yards.

Morris completed 13 passes for 257 yards, Taylor finished with 159 all-purpose yards, and Taj Conway led a Virginia Union defense that gave up just 113 total yards with six tackles. Lincoln’s Justin Johnson rushed for 40 yards and teammate Ivan Mertilus had a game-high eight tackles.

#18 Bowie State 64, Chowan 17 FINAL 
Nationally-ranked Bowie State continued their winning ways on homecoming, defeating Chowan 64-17 in dominant fashion.

Chowan jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 5-yard touchdown run by Bryce Witt.

The Bulldogs would respond in a major way by scoring 54 unanswered over the next two quarters. During that span, BSU quarterback Ja’Rome Johnson threw touchdowns to three different receivers and also ran for three more scores, including runs of 40 and 57 yards.

In addition to contributing to six touchdowns, Johnson finished with 290 yards of total offense that included a game-high 193 rushing yards. Calil Wilkens also ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs, who had 404 rushing yards as a team.

Chowan’s De’Shaun Wetherington ran for 161 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. Connor O’Brien led the Hawks with six tackles and an interception.

Saint Augustine’s 20, Livingstone 12 FINAL

In what was the biggest upset of the weekend in the CIAA, Saint Augustine’s defeated Livingstone, 20-12, to get their first win of the season.

A Josue Gomez field goal (25 yards) in the first quarter and a 6-yard touchdown by Andrew Faramio in the second gave Livingstone a 10-0 halftime lead.

Saint Augustine’s would rally in the second half by driving 70+ yards on three different occasions, including back-to-back 11-play drives that ended with touchdown passes by Jalen Jones (10 and 20 yards) to take the lead and then extend it to 10 points.

A blocked PAT return by Livingstone made the score 20-12 and kept the Blue Bears within striking distance but they failed to capitalize on their next two offensive possessions.

Jones finished with three touchdowns and 286 yards of total offense, including 224 yards passing on 15 completions. SAU defender Durrell Nash had a game-high 14 tackles. Faramio rushed for 46 yards and a score for Livingstone while Ziah Gibson had a team-high six tackles and two sacks.

Winston-Salem State 23, Johnson C. Smith 7 FINAL

Winston-Salem State secured their first conference win of the season by defeating Johnson C. Smith, 23-7, at home.

After a scoreless first quarter, Winston-Salem State would score early in the second when Naiil Ramadan hit Darren Dowdell for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Rams kicker Ivan Caro would add a 19-yard field goal later in the quarter to make it 10-0 at the half.

Late in the third quarter, JCSU would cut the deficit to three when Antonio Wallace found Donnel Thompson for a 2-yard touchdown pass.

WSSU would put the game away with two fourth quarter touchdowns, including a 54-yard pass from Dominique Graves to Jonathan Allen.

Quarderm Sloane ran for 74 yards and a touchdown for Winston-Salem State, who also got 57 yards rushing from Farrell Murchinson and a game-high seven solo tackles (8 total) from Ta’Shaun Taylor. Johnson C. Smith’s Emanuel Wilson rushed for 48 yards and Tyki Lawson-Oates led the Golden Bulls with six tackles.

Fayetteville State 25, Shaw 22 FINAL

Fayetteville State held off a late rally to defeat Shaw, 25-22, and remain the only CIAA Southern Division team without a conference loss.

Shaw would score on their opening drive on a 4-yard run by Sidney Gibbs. FSU would on the next possession with a 12-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 22-yard field goal from Elton Andrew.

In the second quarter, Torrin Campbell found Marquis Gorham on an 11-yard pass to give the Bears a 14-3 lead. The Broncos would respond as Richard Latimer tossed a pair of touchdown passes (6 and 23 yards) to give FSU a 16-14 lead at halftime.

The Broncos would extend their lead on the opening drive after the half on a 1-yard run from Darnell Walker to cap an 80-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes.

Shaw would force a safety late in third quarter but the FSU defense would return the favor with a safety of their own early in the fourth, making it 25-16.

The Bears would add a late touchdown on a 24-yard pass from Vidal Woodruff to Kevonta Moses, who finished with a game-high 86 receiving yards, but their comeback effort fell short.

Latimer went 21-of-27 for 264 yards and a pair of scores while Shaw’s Gibbs ran for 64 yards and teammate Kevin Sherman led the team with nine tackles, including a game-high seven solos. FSU’s Chrishon Springs led all tacklers with 11 total stops.

Virginia State 54, Elizabeth City State 21 FINAL

Virginia State used a balanced attack on offense, including 255 yards on the ground, to defeat Elizabeth City State, 54-21, and win their fifth straight game and remain undefeated in league play.

In the first half, VSU quarterback Cordelral Cook threw two touchdowns and ran for another score while Darius Hagans also ran for a score and took one of Cook’s passes 30 yards for a score that sparked a run of 27 unanswered points.

Both teams delivered explosive scoring plays in the second half. ECSU’s came on a 65-yard pass from Kevin Caldwell to Dajuan Greene, who finished with a game-high 113 receiving yards.

The Trojans got two fourth quarter touchdowns from Donovan Goode, including a 75-yard run their first possession of the quarter. He finished with a game-high 96 yards on nine carries, averaging nearly 11 yards per carry, and Hagans added another 83 yards on the ground.

Caldwell went 7-of-9 for 134 yards for the Vikings, who also got 75 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries from Deshon Saunders. ECSU’s Traevon Freeman led all tacklers with eight, including 3.5 for loss.
