Norfolk State Men’s Track wins fifth straight MEAC Indoor Championship

 The Norfolk State men’s track & field team claimed its fifth straight men’s title at the MEAC Indoor Championships on Monday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

The Spartans compiled 124.5 points across the two-day meet to take home the title. Delaware State (106), S.C. State (101), Coppin State (91.5), and Howard (90) rounded out the top five.

Director of Track & Field Programs Kenneth Giles earned Most Outstanding Coach honors after guiding the Spartans through another championship run. Daniel Mathenge took home Most Outstanding Runner recognition following a dominant distance display.

Kendrick Winfield powered the Spartans’ sprint attack. He captured the 400 meters in 46.67 seconds and doubled back to win the 200 meters in 20.94. Julian Ward added a fifth-place finish in the 200 (21.78), while Donovan Terry placed sixth in the 400 (48.47). Christopher Basking opened the meet with a bronze medal in the 60 meters, clocking 6.82.

Mathenge anchored the distance group, finishing second in the mile at 4:10.6, then closed the meet by winning the 5,000 meters in 14:42.7. Lewis Too placed third in the 5,000 (14:55.1) and eighth in the mile (4:24.7). Jemmel Green scored in both events, finishing eighth in the 800 meters (2:01.5) and seventh in the mile (4:18.2). Mathew Kipkoech added a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters at 15:12.2.

In the field events, Kristopher Stephens delivered a runner-up finish in the triple jump with a mark of 14.76 meters. Jayshaun Campbell competed in the weight throw and placed 11th at 10.95 meters.
