Southern goes down to Grambling on the road

GRAMBLING, LA —  The Jaguars got off to a slow start and was never able to recover dropping their second conference game to Grambling on Saturday afternoon inside Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. Final score was 69-45.

HOW IT HAPPENED– The Tigers outscored the Jaguars 19-10 to end the first quarter to take a 9-point lead after the first ten minutes of the contest, 19-10.
– The Tigers outscored the Jaguars 30-9 to blow the game wide open at the end of the first half, 49-19. 
– The Jaguars outscored the Tigers 16-11 to end the third quarter, 60-34. 
– Dispite outscoring Grambling 11-9 in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to make a comeback as the Jaguars drop their second conference game 69-45.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

– Jaguars went 18-of-57 shooting from the field (31.6 percent) and 5-of-18 from 3PT (27.8 percent).
– SU was led by Aleighyah Fontenot (6-13 FG, 4-10 3PT) finished the day with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals.
– Cayla Obillo (3-5 FG, 2-2 FT) chipped in 8 points in nineteen minutes of play. 
– Eight Jaguars played scored in the contest along with only one in double-digits.
– GSU shot 22-of-50 from the field (44.0 percent) and 9-of-13 from 3PT (45.0 percent). 
– Southern pulled down 33 rebounds, including 21 on the defensive side of the glass.
– The Tigers registered 39 rebounds, with 31 coming on the defensive end. 
– The Jaguars also went 4-for-14from the free-throw line. 
– The Tigers sank 16-of-25 from the charity stripe.
– Southern University finished the night with fourteen steals and thirteen assists.
– Grambling State University came away with four steals and fifteen assists.

Southern will back in action on next Saturday, January 27th for a rematch of the 2023 SWAC Championship game against University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 PM at F.G. Clark Activity Center. The game will be streamed live on Jaguar Sports Network.
