Melbourne United have signed former Duke Blue Devils captain Jack White on a three-year deal.
The 22 year-old from Traralgon has spent the past four seasons with the Blue Devils under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski and alongside recent first round draft picks including Zion Williamson, Jayson Tatum, RJ Barrett, Marvin Bagley III, Wendall Carter Jnr, Grayson Allen, Luke Kennard, Harry Giles and Cam Reddish.
Krzyzewski praised White’s qualities as a player on and off the court.
“Jack was just the best teammate ever. Hard worker – came to work every day. One of the easiest kids to coach that I’ve had the opportunity to coach in my 45 years as a collegiate coach.” Krzyzewski said.
“A top-notch defender, rebounder and shot blocker. He does all the dirty work. Offensively, he’ll be able to add and stretch a defence because he can hit his outside shot.”
“Jack is a great competitor – not a good one – a great, great competitor. He will add to Melbourne United’s already good culture and will fit right in with the culture of winning that Melbourne United’s program has had.”
White represented Australia at the World University Games in 2019 winning a bronze medal alongside the likes of Will Magnay (Brisbane Bullets), Kyrin Galloway (NZ Breakers), Alex Mudronja (Adelaide 36ers) and Jack Purchase (Melbourne United).
Pursued by multiple NBL teams, it was Melbourne who won the race for White’s signature with his potential exciting head coach Dean Vickerman.
“Jack is an exciting young prospect who has incredible potential, so to have him choose Melbourne United, and commit with a long-term deal is fantastic.” Vickerman said.
“He is a leader, highly intelligent and a very hard worker. We believe Jack will have a strong impact both on and off the court and we are eager to help him grow as a player and person within our club’s system and culture.”
White joins a Melbourne United roster that includes Mitch McCarron, Shea Ili, Jo-Lual Acuil, Casey Prather and Sam Short (DP).
