NBA Admits Missed Foul on Victor Wembanyama, Reviewing Potential Retroactive Flagrant

The NBA has acknowledged that officials missed a foul during Game 3 of the NBA Finals involving Victor Wembanyama and Jalen Brunson, adding another layer of controversy to an already intense championship series.

Appearing on ESPN, NBA Head of Officiating Monty McCutchen confirmed that a first-quarter shove by Wembanyama on Brunson should have been called a foul. McCutchen also revealed that the league is continuing its review of the play to determine whether it merits a retroactive Flagrant Foul assessment.

The incident occurred during San Antonio’s 115-111 victory over New York in Game 3, a win that cut the Knicks’ series lead to 2-1. While the admission won’t alter the outcome of the game, it has reignited debate about officiating consistency on the league’s biggest stage.

Should the NBA ultimately determine that the contact rises to the level of a flagrant foul, it could result in additional disciplinary measures or fines. However, any retroactive ruling would not affect the final score or San Antonio’s victory.

The play has quickly become a focal point among fans and analysts, with many questioning how such a significant moment escaped the attention of the officiating crew in real time. Others have pointed to the league’s willingness to publicly acknowledge mistakes as a sign of increased transparency.

For Brunson and the Knicks, the acknowledgment may offer some validation, but it does little to ease the frustration of a missed call in a Finals game. Meanwhile, Wembanyama and the Spurs remain focused on carrying the momentum from Game 3 into the remainder of the series.

As the NBA continues its review, the spotlight will remain on both the league office and the officiating process, particularly with every possession carrying heightened importance at this stage of the season.
