The New York Knicks are one win away from an NBA championship, but if you ask Hall of Famer and Inside the NBA analyst Charles Barkley, Game 4 was less about New York’s comeback and more about San Antonio’s collapse.
Following the Knicks’ dramatic 107-106 victory over the Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, Barkley delivered a scathing assessment of San Antonio’s late-game execution.
“We saw the dumbest basketball team in the history of civilization. The San Antonio Spurs helped the New York Knicks win this game by doing some of the stupidest ass stuff I’ve ever seen on a basketball court.”
Strong words, but many fans watching Wednesday night’s game may have understood where Barkley was coming from.
The Spurs appeared firmly in control for much of the contest, building a double-digit lead and putting themselves in position to even the series. Instead, a combination of turnovers, poor clock management, questionable shot selection, and defensive breakdowns opened the door for New York’s rally.
The Knicks took full advantage.
Led by their veteran leadership and relentless energy, New York chipped away possession by possession before completing one of the most memorable comebacks in NBA Finals history. The win pushed the Knicks to a commanding 3-1 series lead and left San Antonio searching for answers.
What makes Barkley’s criticism resonate is that many of the Spurs’ mistakes were self-inflicted. Rather than being overwhelmed by a Knicks surge, San Antonio repeatedly failed to execute in key moments, allowing momentum to swing completely in New York’s favor.
Of course, credit must also be given to the Knicks. Championship teams capitalize on opportunities, and New York did exactly that. When the Spurs cracked, the Knicks delivered the plays necessary to steal a game that appeared out of reach.
Still, the postgame conversation quickly shifted from the Knicks’ resilience to the Spurs’ unraveling, thanks largely to Barkley’s unforgettable remarks.
Now facing a 3-1 deficit, San Antonio has little room for error. The Spurs must regroup quickly before Game 5 or risk watching the Knicks celebrate a championship.
As for Barkley, his verdict was already in.
And it couldn’t have been much harsher.
Do you agree with Charles Barkley’s assessment, or does New York deserve more credit for completing the comeback? Let us know in the comments.
