The NFL’s decision to eliminate the Pro Bowl has sparked plenty of reaction, but few have been as blunt as Shannon Sharpe.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer and eight-time Pro Bowler placed the blame squarely on the players, arguing that their lack of competitiveness over the past decade helped destroy one of the league’s longest-running traditions.
Speaking on Nightcap, Sharpe didn’t hold back.
“And you NFL players that’s responsible for this that played the last decade, you ought to be embarrassed.”
Sharpe argued that players inherited an event that had existed since 1951 and failed to preserve it.
“Because something that’s been going on before your parents were born, you all ruined it. You ended it.”
The NFL announced Wednesday that the Pro Bowl game would be eliminated following years of declining interest, player withdrawals and efforts to reinvent the event.
Traditional tackle football was scrapped after the 2021 season, with the league shifting to the Pro Bowl Games and eventually emphasizing flag football. But the changes weren’t enough to reverse the decline.
The final Pro Bowl Games reportedly averaged just 1.9 million viewers on ESPN, a number that Sharpe believes reflects the larger problem facing all-star events when players aren’t treating them competitively.
For comparison, the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game reportedly drew approximately 7 million viewers on NBC.
Sharpe also compared the NFL’s situation to the NBA’s ongoing struggles with its All-Star Game, suggesting that leagues can change formats only so many times before the players themselves have to take responsibility for the product.
The Pro Bowl honor itself isn’t going away.
The NFL will continue recognizing 88 players — 44 from the AFC and 44 from the NFC — as Pro Bowl selections each season. However, there will no longer be a Pro Bowl game or replacement alternates.
After 75 years in various forms, the NFL’s all-star game is officially coming to an end.
And according to Sharpe, the players who participated in the final decade should take a hard look in the mirror.
