The Houston Rockets have made a massive commitment to one of the most promising young players in the NBA.
Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension with the Rockets, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The deal also includes a 10% trade kicker, giving Thompson additional financial protection if he is traded during the life of the contract.
Thompson, selected No. 4 overall by Houston in the 2023 NBA Draft, has quickly developed into one of the league’s most intriguing young two-way players.
During the 2025-26 season, Thompson averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, showcasing the combination of athleticism, size, playmaking and defensive versatility that made him such a coveted prospect.
The Rockets clearly believe Thompson is more than just a promising young player — they see him as a foundational piece of their future.
The extension comes as Houston continues building around a young core that includes Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason, while the franchise also looks to contend around veteran superstar Kevin Durant.
For Thompson, the new deal represents the latest milestone in a rapid rise from highly touted prospect to one of Houston’s long-term building blocks.
The five-year extension is expected to begin with the 2027-28 NBA season.
At just 23 years old, Thompson now has both the contract and the opportunity to establish himself as one of the faces of the Rockets franchise.
