The Atlanta Falcons have finally made their decision at quarterback.
Tua Tagovailoa will open the 2026 NFL season as Atlanta’s starting quarterback, beating out Michael Penix Jr. after a monthslong competition that extended through training camp and into the final days before Week 1.
Tagovailoa will get the start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, giving the former Miami Dolphins quarterback an opportunity to begin a new chapter in Atlanta after signing with the Falcons during the offseason.
The decision comes after an up-and-down training camp for Tagovailoa, who nonetheless received the majority of the valuable 11-on-11 repetitions while Penix continued his recovery from a season-ending knee injury suffered in 2025. Penix was not cleared for 11-on-11 work until late August and did not appear in the preseason.
Tagovailoa, meanwhile, started Atlanta’s first and final preseason games. In his final preseason appearance against his former team, the Dolphins, he completed 7 of 8 passes for 95 yards and led the Falcons on an opening-drive touchdown possession.
The Falcons’ decision does not necessarily settle the long-term quarterback situation.
Penix remains viewed as a potential part of Atlanta’s future, but the team evidently believes Tagovailoa is the quarterback best prepared to handle the season opener right now. Penix started nine games for Atlanta in 2025 before suffering his torn ACL.
For Tagovailoa, the opportunity represents a chance to reset his career. He enters his first season with a new organization after six seasons in Miami, where he earned a Pro Bowl selection and led the NFL in passing yards in 2023.
Atlanta will now turn its attention toward Pittsburgh.
The Falcons’ quarterback question has finally been answered. Now Tua gets the chance to show what he can do with QB1 next to his name.
The bigger question: How long can Tua hold onto the job once Michael Penix Jr. is fully healthy?
