MSG employees reportedly thought they were getting a chance to choose their own New York Knicks championship rings. There was just one catch: the rings weren’t real.
According to The Athletic, employees received a mock email appearing to come from the Knicks that featured two championship ring options. But instead of celebrating a championship reward, employees who clicked on a selection were directed to a mandatory cybersecurity course on how to recognize and avoid phishing scams.
The email was reportedly a phishing simulation designed to test whether employees would fall for a convincing message.
The exercise delivered a memorable lesson: even an offer that seems too good to be true can be a trap.
For Knicks fans, the thought of championship rings is exciting. For MSG employees, however, clicking on the wrong option turned that excitement into an unexpected training assignment.
The takeaway? Before clicking on an email promising exclusive rewards, gifts or other surprises, verify the sender and make sure the message is legitimate.
In this case, the only thing employees were guaranteed to receive was a cybersecurity lesson.
