The Carolina Panthers are reportedly moving on from defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, potentially ending his tenure with the organization after three-plus seasons.
Evero joined Carolina in 2023 after serving as the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator in 2022. His departure would represent a significant coaching change for a Panthers defense that has struggled with consistency, particularly against the run.
Why Are the Panthers Making the Move?
The reported decision comes amid another difficult stretch for Carolina’s defense.
According to ESPN’s Mike Kaye, the Panthers had allowed opponents to rush for at least 200 yards 12 times since Evero joined the organization in 2023. That was the most such occurrences by any NFL defense during that span.
Carolina also entered Week 8 ranked last in the NFL in rushing defense, surrendering 153.2 rushing yards per game.
The Panthers’ defensive struggles have been particularly noticeable against the run, despite investments in defensive personnel and flashes of improvement in other areas.
Ejiro Evero’s Carolina Tenure
2023: Hired as Carolina’s defensive coordinator.
2024: Oversaw a defense that surrendered a league-worst 3,057 rushing yards.
2025: Helped lead a major defensive improvement, allowing 77.3 fewer yards per game than the previous season.
2026: Faced renewed criticism amid inconsistent defensive performances.
Evero signed a contract extension in 2025 that reportedly ran through the 2027 season.
What Happens Next?
If confirmed, Carolina will need to determine who takes over defensive play-calling responsibilities and whether the organization makes additional coaching changes.
