According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Wilson interviewed Tuesday for the Wolfpack’s vacant head coaching position.
Wilson spent three seasons at NC State (2008–10) before transferring to Wisconsin for his final collegiate season in 2011. During his time in Raleigh, he completed 8,545 passing yards and threw 76 touchdown passes across 36 games.
The 10-time Pro Bowl selection enjoyed a 14-season NFL career, highlighted by winning Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson announced his retirement in June 2026 and subsequently joined CBS Sports as an analyst.
Wilson isn’t the only former Wolfpack quarterback being considered.
Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has also emerged as a prominent candidate. Rivers, who played at NC State from 2000–03, has reportedly engaged in serious discussions with university officials about the position.
Unlike Wilson, Rivers brings coaching experience, having served as head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, since 2021.
NC State dismissed longtime head coach Dave Doeren on October 24 after more than 13 seasons leading the program. Doeren finished his tenure with a 98-74 record.
The Wolfpack are now evaluating two former NFL stars with deep connections to the program as they search for their next leader.
Neither candidate has been officially named as Doeren’s successor.
Could NC State bring one of its former star quarterbacks home to lead the Wolfpack?
The coaching search is one to watch.
