The Golden State Warriors are taking a different approach to their ongoing situation with Kristaps Porziņģis, reportedly withholding payments on the veteran center’s $20 million salary while continuing to explore potential trade opportunities.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reported the development alongside Anthony Slater, Golden State has determined that Porziņģis is not currently rendering services to the organization and is therefore not delivering salary payments.
The Warriors reportedly retain the ability to trade Porziņģis before the February 11 NBA trade deadline, even without currently paying him. The organization intends to continue exploring potential trade avenues as uncertainty surrounding his basketball future grows.
Porziņģis, 31, has been away from the team indefinitely while dealing with a health issue. He is reportedly leaning toward ending his NBA career rather than attempting another return to the court.
Porziņģis’ uncertain future creates a complicated situation for Golden State
Golden State originally envisioned Porziņģis as an important piece of its frontcourt following his arrival. However, his extended absence has forced the organization to reconsider its plans.
The center signed a two-year, $40 million contract extension with the Warriors in June. His 2026-27 salary is $20 million, while only $3 million of his $20 million salary for 2027-28 is guaranteed.
That contract structure gives Golden State an opportunity to use his salary as a potential trade asset, even with questions surrounding his availability.
Porziņģis appeared in 15 games for the Warriors last season, averaging 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.
What’s next?
The Warriors now face a difficult balancing act: continue exploring trade possibilities, navigate the financial implications of Porziņģis’ absence and determine how to move forward without knowing whether the veteran center intends to continue playing.
With the February 11 trade deadline approaching, Porziņģis’ contract could become an important piece of Golden State’s roster decisions.
For now, his NBA future remains uncertain, and the Warriors appear prepared to keep exploring their options.
