The Albany State Golden Rams men’s basketball team fell 79-68 to Claflin University in their second game of the YES USVI Basketball Classic on December 12. The defeat marks Claflin’s first win over Albany State since November 30, 2017, when the Panthers secured a 68-51 victory in Albany, GA. With this loss, the Golden Rams drop to 4-4 overall, while Claflin improves to 6-5.
Albany State started the game strong but found themselves trailing 40-31 at halftime due to Claflin’s sharp three-point shooting and aggressive play. Shakur Poteat led the Golden Rams with a game-high 21 points, shooting 8-22 from the field, including three three-pointers. Blaise Wallacerecorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Cameron Evans added 14 points off the bench with an efficient 6-9 shooting.
The Golden Rams shot 45.6% from the field compared to Claflin’s 39.1%, but turnovers and second-chance opportunities proved costly. Claflin capitalized on Albany State’s 16 turnovers, scoring 24 points off those mistakes, while their bench added 37 points to secure the win.
