As Hurricane Florence tracks toward the East Coast, it has progressed from a Category 1 storm( 90 mph winds) to a Category 4 ( 130 mph winds )in a span of just thirteen hours.
In South Carolina alone, more than 1 million people residents and visitors are expected to evacuate coastal areas. In North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper said the state is “bracing for a hard hit.” Governor Cooper has already asked President Trump for federal disaster declaration ahead of the hurricane.
In getting out in front of the situation, Fayetteville State Department of Athletics has canceled all athletic activities- including Saturday’s football game against the Benedict College Tigers.
Fayetteville State Director of Athletics Anthony Bennett had this to say in regards to the cancellation:
The health and safety of student-athletes, staff, and fans is our highest priority. Administration is taking the forecast serious by activating available precautions to prevent harm to all involved
There is no make-up date scheduled for the game.
Benedict will return to gridiron action on Sunday, September 23, as they will take on Fort Valley State University in the Palmetto Capital City Classic in Columbia, South Carolina. Kickoff time is set for 4:30 p.m. EST.
Practices for Fayetteville State will not resume until “safe conditions have returned to the campus.”
