The Department of Athletics at Bowie State University has elevated longtime associate head coach Bryan Wilson to interim head coach of the Bulldogs men’s basketball program as the university begins a national search for its next head coach. The appointment follows the retirement announcement of former head coach Darrell Brooks, who stepped away from the program in February 2026.

Wilson steps into the role after 12 seasons on the Bowie State coaching staff, including the past 11 as Associate Head Coach. A former Bulldog standout, Wilson brings extensive experience and deep ties to the program.

During his time on staff, Wilson has played a significant role in the success of the Bowie State men’s basketball program, helping guide the Bulldogs to the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament Championship. Wilson was also a member of BSU’s 2013 CIAA Championship team as a player. In 2019, Wilson and the 2013 championship squad were inducted into the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame.

As associate head coach, Wilson oversaw many aspects of the program’s daily operations, including player development, recruiting, scouting, travel coordination, and community engagement. He has helped recruit and develop six CIAA All-Conference selections, four CIAA All-Rookie Team honorees, and three BOXTOROW HBCU All-Americans. During his tenure, the Bulldogs have also produced a CIAA Rookie of the Year and a CIAA Player of the Year.

Wilson primarily worked with the team’s guards and wing players, playing an instrumental role in the development of several standout student-athletes. In 2018, he established the program’s annual summer Team Camp for high school teams, which serves as both a recruiting platform and a fundraising initiative for the Bulldogs.

In addition to his responsibilities at Bowie State, Wilson served as the Program Director for Five-Star Basketball in Frederick County, Maryland, from 2016 to 2019, overseeing camp operations including marketing, registration, staffing, and daily management.

Wilson also gained international experience during the 2013–14 academic year with the Sport Changes Life Foundation in Belfast, Ireland, where he worked to increase youth participation in sports and mentored young athletes in the local community. While abroad, he also served as head coach of the Ulster Elks girls Under-14 and Under-13 teams, leading the program to a seventh-place national finish in Ireland.

A four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs from 2009 to 2013, Wilson was part of the winningest four-year stretch in program history. He appeared in 105 games, making 44 starts while totaling 689 points and 229 assists. Wilson ranks fifth on Bowie State’s all-time assists list.

Following his collegiate career, Wilson played professionally during the 2013–14 season with the Ulster Elks in Ireland, serving as team captain while helping lead the team to the Northern Ireland Premier League Championship and earning All-Ireland Team honors.

Wilson earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowie State University in 2013 before completing his master’s degree in the same field from the University of Ulster in December 2014.
