Brisbane’s Matt Hodgson opting out of deal with club

from nbl.com.au :

Brisbane Bullets centre Matt Hodgson has exercised his right under the NBL and the Australian Basketball Players’ Association’s collective bargaining agreement to opt out of his contract with the club.

Hodgson has made a significant contribution to the Bullets, playing 57 games since joining the club in 2018.

Bullets CEO Peter McLennan says while it’s disappointing to lose a player of Hodgson’s caliber, the club wishes him the best.

“Hodgy is a great guy and has been a popular member of our squad,” McLennan said.

“The most important thing during this uncertain time is for us to support our players and their families.

“As a local from Ipswich, it has been great to see Matt excel for the Bullets which resulted in a return to Australian colours this year.

“We believe Australia will continue to represent one of the safest, if not the safest, market to be playing professional sport this coming basketball season and be attractive financially compared to many other countries.”

The NBL and ABPA agreed that it was appropriate in the current circumstances that players be able to explore opportunities outside of Australia for the coming season. On that basis, players are able to opt-out of their NBL contracts for this season only and have until Monday, May 4 to do so.

“We‘ll now look at the makeup of our squad and fans can expect us to be active in free agency post July 1 as we look for a suitable replacement,” McLennan said.
