In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
I lead with Orwell’s quote because that has, unfortunately, bore itself out to be rather prophetic. Society has devolved to the depths of valuing feelings over facts, as people are allowed to wrap themselves in comforting truths rather than take the medicine of cold, hard facts.
The latest example of this is Megan Rapinoe and her internet dust-up with Draymond Green. Last week, while speaking at the White House, the soccer star was the latest to bemoan the financial plight of the female soccer player. Rapinoe reminded us of her sexuality, which has nothing to do with her argument, and how vastly underpaid the females are, as compared to their male counterparts.
Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors chimed in on the discussion, articulating himself rather well, telling the people who are beating the drum for women athletes to be better compensated, to put their money where their mouth is and support the , and by extension, the athletes they claim to care so much about.
While what Draymond said, er tweeted, was actually logical, salient and laid out at least one path to fixing the issue, the fact that someone, or more specifically someone with a penis had the temerity to veer from the “just pay them more” talking point set Rapinoe off, calling his comments “frustrating” and “not acceptable at all.”
Revisiting Rapinoe’s White House comments it is clear she took a page out for the sport media handbook of not letting facts get in the way of a compelling narrative. While she was hard at work spinning this sympathetic yarn of the financially disenfranchised female soccer player she conveniently omitted the fact a 2019 court case proves the contrary- that the women soccer players actually out earn their male counter parts, both on a per game and cumulative basis.
If this case is foreign to you, you are not alone; this case was not widely reported because it runs counter to the narrative that Rapinoe, others of her ilk and the sports media are shovelling.
Salute to Draymond Green for injecting some actual truth into this ongoing discussion.
