Florida Memorial Women’s Hooops claims Sun Conference tournament title

Florida Memorial University completed one of its season-long missions by winning the 2024-25 SUN Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament in a convincing 89-63 victory over the defending champions, Southeastern University, at the FMU Wellness Center. FMU currently boasts a 23-4 record as they prepare for the first round of the NAIA tournament.

“All thanks to God for this amazing journey we are on,” exclaimed head coach 

Kevin Herod. “I am so proud of my team’s accomplishments. I have a phenomenal group of amazing young ladies with bright futures ahead of them.”

The Lions wasted no time by delivering an early knockout punch as FMU opened the game on a 10-0 run and enjoyed a 22-4 edge at the end of the first quarter.

FMU was led by senior 

Ebony Black-Smith who finished with a team-high 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with eight boards, three assists, three blocks and one steal while teammate

Alyza Winston produced 17 points on 4-of-8 from behind the arc, including three rebounds and two assists in the blowout victory. Black-Smith was named 2024-25 SUN Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament MVP.

As a team, the Lions dominated the block, scoring 62 points in the paint compared to just 24 for the Fire. FMU shot 54 percent (38-of-71) from the field while stifling its opponents to just 33 percent (18-of-54).

Kamesha Moore produced 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from downtown. She also produced seven assists and three steals while

Makayla Transou filled the stat sheet with eight points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

First-team All-SUN honoree 

Agar Farres Garcia chipped in with six points, eight boards, three assists and one block while teammate

Kalea Rainey finished with nine points, five rebounds and one steal in the championship game.
